Dear you,

This step that you have just taken- of going from “I should talk to someone” to clicking on this very page is one to never forget. This is the moment where you made a decision to consider doing something to feel better, live better, relate better. This is the moment where regardless of what brought you to this moment in your life, you are spending some of your very precious time and energy to find something that improves your life. This is the moment…where you chose you.

So take a second. Stop reading and take in a breath. Take in the fact that you are already moving forward. You are not where you were just an hour ago.

Therapy whether you have done this before or it’s your very first time, is a weird process. So if you are here feeling an odd mix of nervousness and curiosity, know that that is what I would feel too- after all, the process is about meeting a complete stranger for an hour and somehow sharing your secrets and life with hope that with conversation, something will happen that will make life feel better. Totally weird. Accurate, but weird.

Truth be told, I would NOT be sitting here writing this letter to you, had I not been exactly where you are. I have done my own bit of scouring websites and online listings and awkward conversations to see if this stranger with degrees can help me.

And here I am, encouraging you to keep going just a bit longer anyway.
Because dear you…you are someone who has tried it all to feel and be different and either nothing has worked or what has worked, hasn’t worked enough. And if you are someone who despite trying hard to play by the rules, and check off all the life boxes has a gnawing inside you that says “None of this feels right”, you may not know what else to try at this point.

This.

You can try this.

This, is us meeting for an hour every week for a few weeks of your life where who you are- exactly who you are- is completely okay. Where you are not only fully accepted but the change you want becomes the change I want for you as well. We team up. I may have all the degrees and training, but you have the most experience of being “you”. So each week, you bring in yourself and your life experiences and I will bring in my training, my skill, my decades of experience and my relentless need to help you…we collaborate and have some conversations that will make where you want to be, how to get there and how to like yourself while doing so, possible. That’s really what therapy with me is- conversation that creates movement. If something feels too hard to talk about, that’s okay. If somethin feels like it needs to be talked about for months, that’s okay too. You can go as deep as you like if you’re ready or stay afloat until you feel trusting to go deeper.
There is no wrong way to do this.
And more importantly, therapy will not feel like the agony of feeling paralyzed or lost that you may have been feeling.
